A whistleblower has revealed an official investigation that the UK left behind confidential technology permitting the Taliban to track down local individuals who collaborated with allied troops.

Information Leak Puts Numerous in Danger

The whistleblower, called Person A, stated that Afghans affected by the security lapse were told to change residences and alter their contact details to ensure their safety from the ruling authorities.

Lawmakers are investigating the Conservative government's management of a serious disclosure of confidential data involving approximately 19k Afghans who had requested to move to the UK to flee the Taliban.

How the Leak Occurred

A spreadsheet including private information, comprising identities, addresses and in some cases family information, was mistakenly released by a staff member working at special operations center in last year.

The incident became known in late 2023, when the names of nine people who had requested to relocate to Britain were posted on social media.

Militant Technology

“There seems to be a misunderstanding that militant forces do not have the same sort of facilities that allied forces use,” Person A informed the committee.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they have it. Once they acquire your phone number, they can trace you down to within metres. That's precisely what intelligence groups achieved.”

When questioned about whether the Taliban had access to advanced decryption, Person A stated: “They possess all resources.”

Consequences of the Information Leak

Initial findings submitted to the committee indicated that at least 49 relatives and co-workers of people concerned by the breach had been executed.

A legal restriction about the incident was put in force in late 2023 and prevented relevant facts concerning it from public disclosure until mid-2025.

Protective Actions

Because she was restricted, Person A and the volunteer organization she collaborated with advised affected households they were assisting that they had “apprehensions that certain devices had been intercepted”.

“We advised that they moved if they could and changed their phone numbers. That constituted the primary information that, if the Taliban obtained this information, would lead to their location being found,” Person A explained.

Challenged Assessments

The source contested that an official review conducted by an ex-government employee had been wrong to determine that the acquisition of the records by the Taliban was “minimally impact current risk levels”.

“The crucial point is that affected people are not standing up to the Taliban; they live secretly. The primary issue involves past work history.”

The source explained horrific violence endured by at-risk Afghans, involving electric shock torture, simulated drowning, and physical abuse.

“Instances include toddlers who have had limbs fractured to try to get households to reveal locations,” Person A stated.
