Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, such as the pastel suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
His passing follows less than a month after he presented his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included a number of outfits for her American tour following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

The fashion world laments the passing to a true visionary whose influence on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
