Arrangements for Trump-Putin Summit Shelved Shortly Following Budapest Talks Suggested

There are "no preparations" for American leader Donald Trump to meet Russia's Putin "in the near term", a administration representative has declared.

This past week Trump indicated he and the Kremlin leader would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital within two weeks to discuss the Ukraine conflict.

A preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the administration stated the two had had a "positive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was not "needed".

The White House declined to provide any more details on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.

Earlier Events

Trump had discussed a Hungarian meeting during a call with the Russian leader, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the White House.

Various sources indicated his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with insiders indicating the president had urged him to relinquish large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Russia.

Nevertheless, on this week the American president endorsed a ceasefire proposal backed by Kyiv and EU officials to halt the hostilities on the present positions.

"Let it be cut in its current state," he said.

Moscow has frequently resisted against halting the existing front lines.

Moscow was solely focused on "long-term, sustainable peace", Russia's foreign minister stated on Tuesday, implying that pausing conflict would only amount to a short-term truce.

Political Perspectives

The "fundamental issues" of the conflict required resolution, Lavrov said, using Moscow's terminology for a range of maximalist demands that include the acceptance of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of the country – a non-starter for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

Zelensky commented talks regarding the current lines were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "doing everything" to prevent dialogue.

He also said the only topic that could make Moscow "become engaged" was that of the provision of extended-range arms to Ukraine.

Weapons Discussions

The Russian president's unplanned conversation with the US leader recently came ahead of speculation that the United States was planning to provide distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target inside Russia.

Zelensky said it was the missile discussion that had pressured the Kremlin to engage in discussion. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had emerged as a "significant input" in international relations", he added.
