Information Available Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting
No fewer than 16 people perished and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, officials have stated the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were admitted to hospital.
The deceased are yet to be formally identified, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the victims who are known so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She told the moments before the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
