Ipswich boxer Fabio Wardley Expected to Become WBO World Champion as Ukrainian Champion Usyk Gives Up Championship
England's Fabio Wardley is set to be promoted to heavyweight title holder after Usyk decided to relinquish his title
This development comes after the champion informed the World Boxing Organisation he would not proceed with a obligatory title fight against Wardley
WBO Statement
The boxing organization confirmed that Usyk had "elected to relinquish his title after thoughtful consideration"
The Ukrainian maintains the three major championship belts, having overcome Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium in July to become a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion
He initially achieved the four-belt undisputed champion in spring 2024 by beating Tyson Fury, before relinquishing one championship shortly after and choosing to avoid the mandatory challenger
"Organization head Olivieri praised the Ukrainian fighter in a statement"
"The organization offers its deep appreciation and respect to Usyk, an undefeated, two-division WBO undisputed world champion"
"His record represents one of the most extraordinary and historic of the contemporary boxing period"
The WBO added that its institution will continue to support Usyk and his team"
Title Reign
Usyk won the WBO belt in two years ago by overcoming Joshua and went on to protect his title repeatedly
In mid-year, the WBO had ordered negotiations for a required title defense against New Zealand's Parker, only for a back injury sustained by Usyk to cause the delay of the contest
Wardley's Rise
But the 30-year-old British fighter, won the provisional belt from his opponent with a significant shock in the 11th round at London's O2 Arena recently and was required to challenge Usyk before the September deadline
The WBO is yet to officially confirm the title change but his manager Warren believes it is a formality
"Britain has a fresh boxing champion and a rising boxing talent"
"A truly extraordinary path during my long career as a promoter and I could not be more pleased for Wardley"
"Significant bouts in the future for the coming period as he protects his championship and creates a true legacy in the sport"
Wardley only began boxing at twenty years old, coming through the unlicensed white-collar scene and has had just 21 professional fights
