Los Angeles Faces Record-Breaking Heat Only One Week Following Major Winter Weather.
After enduring torrential rains that caused flooding across areas in the city, the City of Angels is now seeing unseasonably high temperatures for late February.
Record-Setting Temperatures
During the day Friday, the thermometer reached 33 degrees Celsius (91 Fahrenheit) in central LA, as reported by the National Weather Service. This breaks the previous daily record for this date, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was established in the previous year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were highlighted on forecast charts for the region.
Public Health Advisories
Forecasters stated that Friday's weather posed an "elevated risk for heat illness" for people sensitive to heat. Their recommendations included:
- Drinking plenty of fluids.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Never leaving anyone unattended in a parked vehicle.
An Extreme Weather Swing
This dramatic increase in heat follows closely after a massive storm system that pummeled the area recently. That storm brought thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to higher elevations, leading to evacuation orders for millions residents.
Unfortunately, the storm also resulted in a massive avalanche in the Tahoe area, which claimed the lives of.
Temperatures Easing
The outlook suggests some relief will arrive. The heat were expected to decrease to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in downtown LA by overnight.
Several cities that experienced ninety degrees featured Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Elsewhere, Oxnard, Westwood, Camarillo, and Santa Maria were expected to see the upper eighties.
Over Saturday and Sunday, central LA can expect readings in the 80s, with mid-70s temperatures on tap for the start of March.
