New York City Mayor Eric Adams Will Support Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race

NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams has announced his intention to support former Governor Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, even after an extended period of strained relations between the two Democratic figures.

A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism

Only weeks ago, the mayor had strongly criticized Cuomo, calling him a “deceptive figure and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” However, in a recent development, Mayor Adams changed his position, revealing he now plans to appear with the former governor in neighborhoods where he maintains significant backing.

“It's essential to really wake up the Black and brown communities that have been affected by gentrification on how critical this race is,” Adams commented.

He added, “They have watched their rents increase due to gentrification and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and talk directly with organizers and organizations and I will appear with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them involved.”

Election Landscape and Recent Events

The election battle has so far been dominated by the contest between Cuomo and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose increasing popularity has made headlines internationally and represented hopes for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democratic party.

During a latest candidate forum, both Mamdani and Republican nominee his conservative opponent declared they would decline the mayor's support if offered.

Months ago, Adams had launched his bid for another term as an independent after being indicted on legal accusations which were later thrown out in exchange for his assistance with government enforcement actions across the city.

During a separate media briefing on the same day, Adams responded to reporters asking about the support announcement by stating, “I'm meeting Andrew this evening.”

The announcement followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ first game at the famous arena, which occurred right after a heated candidate debate.
