Senegal's Emerging Talent Camara: From Dreams to Tournament Favorites.

As I enter the space, the young midfielder picks up a football he clings to throughout the conversation. This serves as a simple visual metaphor for a dream he has always held onto. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” states the Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and raw talent won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the hardest approval to secure didn't come from a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me playing soccer but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Overcoming Early Hurdles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to chase his career in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

However, the famed academy – the club that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the best player in a local competition, Génération Foot were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the training centre. They didn’t want me from returning home,” Camara said.

A Landmark Season and European Arrival

This move set him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to the title and earning player of the tournament.

Soon after, he signed for Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” states the youngster. He has lived by himself in Europe, a situation his family support to maintain his concentration.

Influences and Playing Style

Off-field noise aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are notable assets. He admits he must to temper his competitive fire, after being shown red early in his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.

Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals

At Monaco, he values learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Currently, attention is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential transfer to the English top flight, he remains focused on Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he insists. He is often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about targeting the senior top prize down the line.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England in their own country… it instills belief.”

Looking ahead, Lamine Camara blends a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams as he aims to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own legendary path in the game.
