A renowned South African radio and club DJ has been murdered in the country's largest city Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a country struggling with rampant crime.

Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was attacked in the city centre on Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities reported the forty-year-old presenter was approached by a trio of assailants, with one opened fire on him before escaping on foot.

The reason of the attack has not been established and no suspects have been apprehended have taken place, police said.

Law enforcement indicated that Stock was ambushed as he was departing from a building in the vicinity of the city center landmark.

Surveillance tape reportedly captured a man with dreadlocks and wearing what resembled a guard's attire opening fire on Stock before running away.

The DJ tried to run away after he was hit but collapsed a short distance away.

It was further revealed that Stock had an gun that was not fired and nothing was taken during the assault.

Important clues, like cartridges, were recovered from the scene.
