The Gruesome Animated Movie Conclusion That Stays With Viewers
Out of all the adult-oriented cartoon movies I have personally watched, nothing has remained with me quite like the terror-laced conclusion of the viscerally violent and highly provocative 2022 movie Unicorn Wars.
In the year 2015, the Spain-based writer-director created a dark, somber , frequently brutal universe that included some tiny , desolate hints of optimism.
Although The Unicorn Wars feels like it came from an impulse to push the medium further, the director clarified that it was more an attempt to express a widespread, multicultural message concerning “the common origin of each battle.”
This theme is expressed through a band of vividly colored bears , openly modeled after a famous series of cuddly characters.
Maturing in a culture centered on militarism as well as the defense industry, many of these animals are fixated on killing unicorns, because of a holy book that claims the bears they used to be masters of the forest, until the horned beings forced them out.
A few did not entirely fallen for the propaganda, , prefer to try out substances or fornicate in the woods.
Unlike their friendly counterparts, these colorful critters have visible sexual organs , clear urges.
For one especially vicious, pessimistic creature, the character Bluey, the conflict against unicorns transforms into a route to power — and specifically to authority above his gentler, more compassionate sibling the bear Tubby.
This bear is a bully and an obvious antisocial figure , and when horror takes over his squad and kills his comrades one by one, he seizes more and more power for himself, through ever more gory, harmful methods.
At the same time, these mythical beings are enduring their own horror, as a growing, harmful creature in their woods.
“In the early stages, it feels like a humorous movie,” the director commented. “Yet it evolves into a more intense and sad movie. And by the end, it becomes a horror film.”
Unicorn Wars begins feeling a bit like one of the more quirky films by a legendary filmmaker, which find a wicked pleasure in allowing drawn beings curse, fire weapons, or sex each other up.
Subsequently it becomes more akin to a darker movie by that same creator, with increasingly graphic violence , a tangible link to the actual horror of war.
Ultimately, it’s a full-on Grand Guignol carnage.
The horror that makes the film a Halloween-friendly movie starts a lot earlier than indicated.
Unicorn Wars is one for the most dedicated fans of gore, for enthusiasts of extreme cinema who wish to see a movie they have not watched previously, and can endure a plot that offers no restraint.
Watch it in a dimly lit space free from interruptions, and the conclusion will dig into your mind and take up residence there.
