The Mayor-Elect confirms plans to make his home in historic Gracie Mansion
NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that became a focal point throughout his election bid.
An Iconic Home
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors since the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key issue, hesitated to declare this decision immediately after his victory in November.
"This decision rested on the security of my family and the importance of directing my complete efforts on implementing the agenda for affordability New Yorkers supported," stated Mamdani on Monday.
Leaving Astoria
He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district famous for its diverse immigrant populations and international dining.
"To the people of Astoria: thank you for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.
"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, it will continue to reside inside me and my work," he said.
Political Debate
Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.
But his critics, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit although he is from a famous family.
A House Not Always Used
Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side during his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a venue for public city functions, and pushed for significant upgrades of the older mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment a stark contrast to his humble Astoria home.
Adorned in pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.
Internally, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's historical period.
The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, meaning the city regulates on how much landlords can increase rent each year.
City residents view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the price of rent rises faster than the average income.
It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
