An underground market for unapproved slimming medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, based on recent findings.

The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by social media influencers for its supposed fat-burning properties. Viewers are urged to message these accounts privately for source information, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Additionally, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of participants share “before and after” images, administration instructions and claims of next-day British shipping. Sellers promote the substance there before directing buyers to other platforms for transactions.

Understanding Retatrutide

This medication is an experimental injection developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could assist patients lose up to a quarter of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed online as the successor to Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Voice Concerns

However, doctors and chemists have warned that the sale of what remains an unlicensed medication in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could result in individuals administering products of unknown origin.

Some professionals said the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the rising cost of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Selling the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that must not be promoted or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some content creators attempt to circumvent the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted drug, but promotion and supply can still breach medicines, advertising, and customer regulations, risking fines, prosecution or imprisonment.

Platform Response and Content Elimination

According to TikTok, the platform has taken down problematic content and prohibited associated keywords and query recommendations. The company stated it was dedicated to maintaining the service safe and investing in strengthening compliance measures.

Digital Trading Activities

Research also found groups with up to nine thousand participants selling retatrutide using the platform's built-in discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with numerous of users, filled with images of weight loss, glowing reviews and step-by-step guides for preparing or administering at residence.

Within minutes of entering one community, a seller shared WhatsApp details, where the majority of purchases take place. The vendor sent an guidebook and guaranteed delivery within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. None asked about body mass, medical conditions or past usage.

Product Information and Costs

Inside these communities, messages display dark colored packages with Royal Mail stickers, claiming to contain fresh supplies. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at residence with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors usually priced at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how much time a pen should last, vendors give conflicting responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Security Actions

A spokesperson for the messaging service said it regularly monitored dangerous material on its service including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Expert Cautions

“People are injecting substances they cannot confirm. Even if the research behind this drug is sound, these online products may not include what they advertise,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

A medical professional of an online medical service connected the increase in interest to current cost increases for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are turning to social media. But counterfeit injections are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the environment they were produced in was sterile,” she said.

Her staff has already seen individuals injured by self-injection from unconfirmed sources. “We understand the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is gambling with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”

A spokesperson from Eli Lilly stated retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any government authority globally. “Consequently at this point no one can market [it] for human use,” they explained, adding that any product “falsely representing itself as a company experimental substance not yet authorized … may expose users to possibly serious health risks”.
