Extreme heat and intense wildfires have devastated the dry landscape of Western Australia. As temperatures expected to persist soaring above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a major heatwave warning has been declared across much of the south-west.

Widespread Heatwave Warnings Throughout the Region

This situation come after this month's bushfires in New South Wales, which caused the destruction of homes and loss of life. Intense heatwave warnings have also been issued for later this week in areas within South Australia and New South Wales, as a system of atmospheric pressure moves to the east, delivering intense sunshine to a broad swath of the area.

The mix of extremely dry land and unbroken high temperatures creates a dangerous scenario for emergency crews.

Worldwide Climatic Events Cause Disruption

Elsewhere, a metropolis was left in darkness recently after strong winds damaged the urban electrical network, with falling trees knocking out power lines. The weather conditions also caused significant travel disruption at a key airport, where numerous air services were grounded. Substantial damage to power systems is anticipated to create ongoing issues as utility companies work urgently to restore power to over 1 million inhabitants.

Atypical Fog Covers Sunny Area

At the same time, a region famed for its clear skies and plentiful sunshine has endured one of its grayest and most overcast weeks on recorded history. A specific type of fog, which typically lasts for only a short time, has been remarkably widespread and persistent this year, keeping the mercury at a major airport below 8C for more than a week – the longest such streak in more than three decades. The prolonged fog has been fuelled by exceptional autumn precipitation that resulted in the ground waterlogged.

Storm Delivers Snow to Holiday Islands

Turning to Spain, a powerful storm has ushered in heavy rain, powerful gales and even snow to a set of islands – weather many would not associate with this favored holiday destination. While wintry precipitation is not unheard of at elevated areas, the system delivered some of the deepest snow depths since 2016 to a protected area, compelling its temporary shutdown.

Alongside the snowfall, fierce winds from the north buffeted the island chain, with wind gusts exceeding 50mph recorded on multiple locations. The effect of the storm is expected to ease this week with more seasonal conditions taking hold.
